Protector safety, or sometimes referred to as Industrial Protective Co (IPCO), is company behind the "Lunguard" respirator, which is theorised to be Australia's only original designed and manufactured respirator. In addition to manufacturing respirators, IPCO manufactured a large variety of other industrial goods and PPE, such as safety helmets and dust masks.
Protector Safety exported a large amount of their equipment internationally, under the name "Protector International Pty. Limited", primarily to other countries in the commonwealth, but to other countries across the world as well, with it being reported that Protector Safety products were sold in over 100 different countries. Their largest export market was South Africa, however, they also exported equipment to the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, or Rhodesia at the time, Malaysia, New Zealand, various different South American Countries as well as the United States of America.
The head office of the Victorian department of Protector Safety, nicknamed "Safety House" was located in 178 Ferrars St, South Melbourne. There was multiple branches set up throughout the state as well, at 174 Somerville Rd, Footscray Melbourne - 30 Spring St, Geelong - 15 Springvale Rd, Springvale, Melbourne - 40 George St, Morwell.
Protector Safety manufactured their equipment in various different countries, at one point under the name Industrial Protective Co Manufacturing PTY. Ltd. The most obvious starting country is Australia, with plants in Fawkner - Melbourne, as well as a plant in a unknown location in Queensland. In 1959 a manufacturing plant was created, with a secondary plant being opened sometime later. Some sources hint that a manufacturing plant also existed somewhere in South Africa, as well as a plant in the United States of America, managed by an unknown US Industrial company who also imported Protector Safety's products into America (However it is unknown if the that plan went through)
Eventually Protector Safety would be purchased by Scott Safety, which was later purchased by 3M. The company still makes general PPE for the Australian industrial/building safety market today, even manufacturing respirators as seen here
