The Avon Protections FM53 was the standard issue respirator for Australian Special Forces, replacing the ADF-10/S10 respirator in 2014, only to be replaced by the Airboss Low Burden Mask just a few years later.
The FM53 comes as either a single port or twin port mask. The ADF only purchased the twin port variation of the FM53
The mask was issued with a variety of accessories, such as lens outserts, chemical hoods, and a Voice Processing Unit.
One of the main selling points for the FM53 is the mask's ability to switch from negative pressure mode (For the mask to be used as a standard respirator) to positive pressure mode (For the mask to be used with PAPR & SCBA units), via the use of the Variable
Resistance Exhalation Unit.
The FM53, along with the M50, another mask from Avon Protections, was said to be a contender for the ADF's LAND 2110 CBRN overhaul project, however Airboss with their Low Burden Mask ended up winning the contract instead.
